I have practiced yoga in different shapes and forms for nearly two decades, but coming to Yoga Sanctuary about eight years ago felt like home. In particular, its way of building community, and its encouragement of a holistic, energetic experience of yoga. The Calming Yoga class taught by Shelley, which I took regularly for several years, helped me unwind a long cycle of anxiety and depression, which is a lifelong practice I continue.
With yoga, I have found a powerful tool for settling the mind. If my mind were a lake, my thoughts can so often be kicked up sand clouding the water. With yoga, more than any other practice, I have found the sand can swiftly drift to the bottom, leaving behind a calmness and clarity.
When I first learned about the 230 hour Yoga Sanctuary Holistic Yoga Teacher Training, my heart leapt. I wasn’t sure yet how I’d find the time but knew it was calling me. After completing the training in May 2019, I was so honored to begin teaching at the studio, and in the very class, that has been so transformative for me.
My classes are typically slower flow, mindful practices, striving for a balance between steadiness and ease, strength and flexibility, challenge and relaxation. I also strive to help students make the class their own, listening to their body and what it needs that very day, and coming home to themselves more fully. I hope to share Calming Yoga with you on Tuesday evenings, 8-9pm.
